"...Behold, I am making all things new..." - Revelation 21:5
The Bible makes over thirty comparisons between the old man, one without Christ, and the new man, one who has been saved by Christ. Where there was lying, now there is the telling of the truth. Holding a grudge turns to forgiveness. Criticism is replaced with edification. Selfishness gives way to a love for others. Complaining is subdued by thanksgiving. A love for the world is diminished by a love for God. Temporal values give way to eternal values. Pleasing people is laid aside and pleasing God becomes the priority. One of the great truths of Scripture is that in Christ you are set free from the enslavement to your sinful ways and by His Spirit you can walk in the newness of life. In His timing God will make all things new, including a new heaven and a new earth. In the meantime as you enter a New Year, as a believer, "lay aside the old self... and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth." Be encouraged!

"I shall delight in Thy statutes; I shall not forget Thy Word." - Psalm 119:16
For many years now, when using a credit card to pay for a meal at a restaurant, I have signed my name and printed "Romans 1:16" underneath. I have often wondered if anyone paid any attention to it or at least, out of curiosity, looked up the verse in the Bible. However, for the first time last month the waiter stopped me as I was leaving, and said he was trying to google the verse. I responded by saying, "let me tell you what it says," and quoted the verse to him. He said he had a favorite verse but struggled to come up with the reference and the wording which is quite typical today. I was reminded of the words of the Psalmist, "How can a young man keep his way pure? By keeping it according to Thy word." "... Thy word I have treasured in my heart, that I may not sin against Thee." One of the important ways to ward off the encroachment of sin is to memorize the Word. As we are about to enter a new year may the Lord give us a desire to hide His Word in our hearts. Be encouraged!

"...stand firm in the faith..." - 1 Corinthians 16:13
In recent years, individuals, organizations and movements have been emboldened to speak out against biblical Christianity. One has been the rising voice of Atheism claiming that faith is an intellectual disease, the most dangerous and wicked force on earth and that the cure for faith is science. But we know "the righteous will live by his faith". It was by faith that "men of old gained approval" because "without faith it is impossible to please Him." We are "saved through faith" and "justified by faith." We come to God's Word daily to read, and on Sunday to hear it preached because "faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ." This allows us to "walk by faith, not by sight" and to "contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all delivered to the saints." Therefore, in the end we will say with the Apostle Paul ... "I have kept the faith." Be encouraged!

He said to them, "But who do you say that I am?" - Matthew 16:15
Who is Jesus? The answer to this question has eternal consequences and is a matter of heaven or hell. For the Muslim, He is a prophet but not as great as Mohammed and did not die for our sins. For the Mormon, He is the spirit brother of Satan and a polygamist. For the Jehovah's Witness, He is the created rather than the Creator and not resurrected from the dead. For the Christian Scientist, He "was born of the Virgin Mary's thought" with no physical death or resurrection. For the Roman Catholic, His work on the cross is not fully sufficient to atone for our sin; therefore, baptism and inclusion into the Roman Catholic Church is necessary. For the Free Mason, He is neither Lord nor Savior. All of the above are false and not the Jesus of the Bible. Peter had the right answer. "Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God." The early church confirmed the biblical truth about Jesus. He is very God, the only One who can save. Only childlike faith in Him alone is necessary for salvation. Yes, He is "our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus". Be encouraged!

"And we have believed and have come to know that You are the Holy One of God." - John 6:69
In Chanute, Kansas, one disgruntled person forced the removal of a picture of Jesus at the entrance of the Royster Middle School which had been placed there in 1956 as a memorial to a fourteen year old student who collapsed and died in the school's gymnasium. Although the town of over nine thousand and its thirty churches wanted the picture to remain, the actions of just one brought it down. Satan only needed one person to bring sin and death to this world. He needed only one to introduce the world to jealousy, hatred and murder. He needed only one to betray the Lord of glory. He needed only one to give birth to the false religions of Mormonism, Christian Science and many more. He needed only one to start a movement that would result in the slaughter of the unborn. But, we need only One "to extinguish all the flaming missiles of the evil one." We need only One to "overwhelmingly conquer" all that the world can throw at us. And we "know that this One is indeed the Savior of the World." "For the Mighty One has done great things for me; and holy is His name." Be encouraged!

"At evening time, behold there is terror!" - Isaiah 17:14
Last week, beginning in France, the sound of terror resonated across the world and all the way to the throne of God. Once again, "...thus says the Lord, I have heard a sound of terror, of dread, and there is no peace." It can be said of those in Paris, tragically for too many, "At evening time, behold, there is terror! Before morning they are no more..." We are not the first generation who "waited for peace, but no good came; for a time of healing, but behold, terror!" And if the Lord tarries we will not be the last, for He warned us before He comes "...there will be terrors", and "men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world..." We are not there yet, "but when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." In a day of terror and tragedy let us draw near to the One who has sealed us for the day of redemption. Be encouraged!

"Not returning evil for evil, or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead..." - 1 Peter 3:9
As believers, we forgive because we are forgiven. We show mercy and grace because we have been shown mercy and grace. We bless others because we are blessed. According to a new Pew study released last week, more and more Americans have no religious affiliation and have negative views toward religion. This can create a growing challenge to all who belong to Christ. In the face of opposition, it is our nature to fight back, and so it was with Peter. He, of all men, should have known what the grace of God had done for him in this respect. He had been not only fast with the sword; he had been quick with his tongue. In time, the Holy Spirit tamed Peter. Has He tamed you? We are called to do what only God can do through us. Left to ourselves our choice is to add flame to the fire, but His choice is to extinguish the flame. "Bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you". And be encouraged!

"Therefore, those who had been scattered went about preaching the word." - Acts 8:4
When "a great persecution arose against the church", the Apostles stayed in Jerusalem while the others were scattered to the outlying areas. These were boldly proclaiming the Gospel and the Word of God. It is the privilege of all believers to be bold in their declarations, confident in their witness and joyful in their call to speak the truth of Scripture. Why should we turn to psychology and other forms of human wisdom when we are fully equipped by the Word of God? In these times of dwindling Christianity, we need to realize that in our personal life and with others, the Word of God is always profitable, always in season and always needed. There is never a moment when God's Word is not appropriate. There is never an instance when God's Word is not convenient or relevant. The Lord spoke to Isaiah and said, "So shall My Word be which goes forth from My mouth; It shall not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it". Be encouraged!

"...there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God's gracious choice." - Romans 11:5
Whether Jew or Gentile, God has always had His faithful remnant. Are we thankful to be the Lord's remnant or do we want to be free of hardship and difficulties, well liked among our peers and comfortable in the pew? In reality, the Lord has promised none of these but instead has promised persecution to all who believe and desire to live a godly life. Veith writes, "as the culture becomes more and more lawless and brutal, Christians may even taste persecution. The church may or may not grow in such a climate. I suspect that it will shrink to a faithful remnant." Perhaps the church in America, with an abundance of liberalism on the left and legalism on the right, is already shrinking to a faithful remnant of those who have a pure and simple devotion to Christ. And for those who truly belong to Christ they "are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time." The faithful remnant is always safe and secure, made certain by God's sovereignty and grace. Be encouraged!

"To...the church in Philadelphia write: He who is holy, who is true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens..." - Revelation 3:7-13
To this church the Lord describes Himself as holy and true, signifying He is the chosen One of God who can be fully trusted. Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father, but through Me." Jesus is the only door to salvation. Having the key of David signifies He is the only entrance into the future Messianic Kingdom of God. Many have tried to close the door to salvation or enter by another way. However, "there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men, by which we must be saved." The door is now open, but someday it will be shut. May we all be encouraged to tell others, "Seek the Lord while He may be found; call upon Him while He is near," "for He says, "At the acceptable time I listened to you, and on the day of salvation I helped you"; behold, now is "the acceptable time," behold now is "the day of salvation". "For the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." - 1 Corinthians 1:18
Last week Pope Francis addressed the U.S. Congress as the "vicar of Christ" yet never mentioned His name. He opened his remarks to the United Nations by saying "I came in my own name" and was treated during his visit to the United States as if he were God. Jesus said, "I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; if another shall come in his own name, you will receive him." Thanks to television and the internet, the whole world witnessed the reality of the words spoken by Christ with few, most likely, realizing the significance of it. In the Pope's message at St. Patrick's Cathedral, he said, "We need to remember that we are followers of Jesus... and his life, humanly speaking ended in failure, the failure of the cross." Was the cross a failure? Failure comes when popes, presidents and the majority of the people in the world fail to believe the wonderful and glorious work of the cross. Through Christ and His cross, we who believe have victory over sin, death, and the devil. Yes, the cross, according to the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, was not a failure but God's answer to the power and consequences of sin. Be encouraged!

"And what I say to you I say to all, 'Be on the alert!'" - Mark 13:37
The Lord continually exhorted His followers to be on the alert due to the spiritual dangers of temptation and sin. Living in the comforts of this present time makes it so easy to think all is well. I have even heard people say they no longer struggle with temptation and sin. However, it has also been said, "there is no temptation like being without temptation." Aware of that danger John Newton wrote, "...it is better to suffer from Satan's fiery darts, than to be lulled asleep and drawn into a careless security by his more subtle, though less perceptible devices. Thus one grows indifferent to the means of grace and sinks into a worldly spirit, or like the church of Laodicea, imagines himself rich, and increased in goods, and in need of nothing." In reality, it is because of temptation and sin we are in need of God's grace every day. Thanks be to God that He is always there to provide it. Be on the alert! Be encouraged!

"You shall have no other gods before Me." - Deuteronomy 5:7
The Lord spoke to Isaiah and said, "...And there is no other God besides Me, a righteous God and a Savior; There is none except Me." Yet, all across America there are many who have created their own god: a god who is all love but not holy; a god full of grace and mercy but not just; a god who is forgiving of all sin with no need of repentance; a god whose narrow way is only their way; a god who sends all to heaven but none to hell. This god is one of their own imagination, not the God of the Bible and in reality, no god at all. Jesus said, "And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou has sent." As believers, we know the only true God who meets our deepest needs. We do not have to create a so-called god to coincide with what we think we need. Be encouraged!

"...go and take word to My brethren..." - Matthew 28:10
When Christ died on the cross, all the brethren had scattered. No doubt they were fearful, spiritually weak and lacking in faith. Peter claimed he would follow the Lord unto death, but even a slave girl brought him to the point of denying Christ. Even so, after His resurrection, the risen Lord longed to see those who had let Him down. Although His disciples forsook Him, He would not forsake them. Even though they failed Him, He would not fail them. How often do we ourselves fail our Lord and let Him down? It does not seem to take much to bring us to silence concerning Christ. Yes, it can often be said of us, "O you of little faith..." However, we read in Scripture, "If we are faithless, He remains faithful; for He cannot deny Himself."
"Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions they fail not;
As Thou has been Thou forever wilt be.
Great is Thy faithfulness Lord, unto me!"

"And many more believed because of His word." - John 4:41
The Lord walked among the Jews for over three years performing many miracles, but only a relative few of them believed. The Samaritans had only two days with the Lord, and although He did not perform any miracles, many believed. Do you wonder why? Seeking for signs, the Jews rejected the truth and stoned the prophets. Referring to the Jews by parable, the Lord said, "If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, neither will they be persuaded if someone rises from the dead." On the other hand, the Samaritans not seeing one miracle were "born again of seed which is perishable but imperishable, that is, through the living and abiding word of God." So be encouraged to share the Gospel. That simple truth forever settled in the Word of God, is still "the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes".

"Like a good shepherd,..." - John 10:14
"...Christ knows all His believing people. Their names, their families, their dwelling-places, their circumstances, their private history, their experience, their trials -- with all these things Jesus is perfectly acquainted. There is not a thing about the least and lowest of them with which He is not familiar. The children of this world may not know Christians, and may count their lives folly: but the Good Shepherd knows them thoroughly, and wonderful to say, though He knows them, does not despise them. Like a good shepherd, Christ cares tenderly for all His believing people. He provides for all their wants in the wilderness of this world, and leads them in the right way to a city of habitation. He bears patiently with their many weakness and infirmities, and does not cast them off because they are wayward, erring sick, footsore, or lame". Be encouraged!

"Create in me a clean heart, O God." - Psalm 51:10
Nineteenth-century Russian novelist, Ivan Turgenev, wrote, "I do not know what the heart of a bad man is like. But I do know what the heart of a good man is like. And it is terrible." Jeremiah would concur as "the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?" The Psalmist wrote, "Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me and know my anxious thoughts; and see if there be any hurtful way in me..." How does God search our hearts? How does God reveal the condition of our hearts? A psychologist would attempt to do so with many sessions at great expense, but God has a much simpler way. It is "the Word of God"... that is "able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart." This is why we should read, study and memorize the Word that we may know the condition of our heart. We cannot trust our own hearts -- our thoughts, emotions and motives -- but we can entrust our hearts to the Word of God. God will not only search our hearts, but by faith create in us a clean heart. Do not trust your heart. Come to the Word daily. Be encouraged that you can have a clean heart!

And we know that, "we shall be like Him, because we shall see Him just as He is." In heaven we will be set free from the deceptions, power and presence of sin and "be conformed to the likeness of his Son." We will not be gods, as some say, but we will be holy as He is holy. He will resurrect our mortal bodies from the grave and give us a glorified body free of sickness, pain, suffering and death. We will no longer face hardship, heartache, dangers or persecution "and He shall wipe away every tear." "...Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners." - 1 Timothy 1:15
There are many clichés given in the context of Christianity that cannot be fully supported by "Thus saith the Lord." We have all heard the erroneous statement, "God helps those who help themselves". As the culture continues to sink into moral decline, we often hear the expression, "God hates the sin, but loves the sinner." Now, what verse is that? Is that what the sinner needs to hear? Can you separate sin from the sinner apart from saving faith? Are we giving the sinner the impression all is well even if he continues in his sin because God loves him? What about the Day of Judgment? Will the Lord say, "You are an unrepentant sinner, but I love you; welcome to the Father's house."? Or, will He say, "I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness."? God, out of His great love for mankind provided a means of salvation from the power and penalty of sin. Yes, God loves the sinner, but man needs no excuse whatsoever to continue in sin. He needs to hear the gospel which is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. What a privilege to say to any sinner, "Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and you will be saved..." Be encouraged!

"For God has shut up all in disobedience that He might show mercy to all." - Romans 11:32
Because all men are sinners and therefore disobedient to the Word of God, it is as if God has placed all men in prison with no way to escape or gain freedom on their own. There are no exceptions, for "the Scripture has shut up all men under sin." Is there a way out? Not of our own doing. The answer is found in the mercy of God. In mercy, God withholds that which we deserve. Having chosen to sin, we deserve the enslavement to sin and to suffer the consequences of sin. "But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy..." When one comes to Christ in saving faith, by His mercy, he is set free from the imprisonment of sin, now and forever. "... "Therefore we will not fear, though the earth should change..." - Psalm 46:2
This week, CNN reported that according to science we are in an emergency situation because of climate change. Earlier it was reported, not by CNN, that several countries have altered their climate data to prove global warming is real. In March, it was reported that U.S. government scientists do the same -- a practice that is neither new nor a secret. Should changing the facts be called science? Isn't it amazing how people will change their entire lifestyle -- what they buy, drive and even their diet because they fear the proclaimed consequences of man-made global warming? Yet they change nothing in regard to the One who will destroy the earth with fire. But for us, "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth should change." "...we are looking for new heavens and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells." Be encouraged!

"...the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect." - Romans 12:2
We all should desire to be in God's will. God's will may be to be at peace, in good health or financial security. On the other hand, it may be persecution, failing health or financial loss. In either case, it is better to be in God's will than not. God's will is good. It may present difficulties and can be hard to endure, yet it is good, for God knows what is best for you. Because it is acceptable to God, it ought to be acceptable to you. If it pleases Him, it should please you. God's will is good and acceptable because it is perfect. For example, it was God's will -- good, acceptable, and perfect -- that Christ would die on the cross for you. Sometimes we cannot understand how it could be God's will when it seems like everything is going wrong. God is sovereign and knows the end from the beginning. Nothing you encounter takes Him by surprise. "For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure." Be encouraged!

"Come to Me..." - Matthew 11:28
Our Lord Jesus Christ is a Savior of infinite compassion and lovingkindness. At the same time, the Savior of mankind is the Almighty. Through His miracles, beginning with the creation, He proved nothing was impossible for Him. He created the world out of nothing. He commands and it comes to pass. He can bring light to the darkness of our souls, peace in the midst of our anxiety, purpose in the midst of our confusion, strength at the point of our greatest weakness, victory over our most persistent sins, forgiveness for our failure in following Him and joy in the midst of our sorrow. We hear more and more about the world and our nation rejecting God but the greatest need of all remains the same, the need to come to Him. Will you come to Him with all the concerns of your life? After all He has promised "...the one who comes to Me I will certainly not cast out". Be encouraged!

"...and a foolish people has spurned Thy name." - Psalm 74:18
Recent days have proven there is a coming out of those who mock, ridicule and verbally attack Christianity. Things are being written and said that just a few years back would have been unthinkable. All this points to the coming of one called in Scripture the man of sin who will oppose all that is of the true God, and from his mouth will come "arrogant words and blasphemies against God." We must realize from this point on that Christianity will be increasingly under attack in this nation and abroad. God is sovereign over the nations "having determined their appointed times" and everything will happen according to His predetermined plan. Finally, "...we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." So, "Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong." And be encouraged!

"Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people." - Proverbs 14:34
With the ruling handed down by the U.S. Supreme Court last week, the issue at hand is not "traditional marriage" but biblical marriage divinely ordained and established by God with the creation as man and wife/male and female. The Lord Jesus confirmed this in the Gospels. The Old Testament forbids LGBT practices, and Romans One records the results of rejecting God and pursuing such a lifestyle. The New Testament is clear that those who practice such things shall not enter the Kingdom of God. The answer is, as with any and all sin, to turn to Christ for forgiveness and victory over such sin or sins. We should not expect sinners to make decisions as if they were saints. To call good evil and evil good will always characterize the self-righteous, Christ rejecting leadership of any nation. But do not let what is happening in a world that is passing away get you down. The more decadent and less desirable the world becomes, the more precious and desirable is the Lord Jesus Christ to all who belong to Him. Be encouraged!

"Neither is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything, since He Himself gives to all life and breath and all things." - Acts 17:25
The call of every believer is to be "fervent in spirit, serving the Lord." Jesus said, "You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only." But even if no one served Him, and the whole world turned against Him our God would not be in any need. We read in Scripture, "For every beast of the forest is Mine, the cattle on a thousand hills, I know every bird of the mountains and everything that moves in the field is Mine. If I were hungry, I would not tell you; for the world is Mine, and all it contains." As the song says, He's Got the Whole World in His Hands." So why do we serve the Lord? Because we know that He provides for us and we do not provide for Him. All that we have comes from His hand. It is certainly a humbling thought to know He does not need us, but oh, how we need Him! "Serve the Lord with gladness". Be encouraged!

"Let your character be free from the love of money..." - Hebrews 13:5
Do you realize that if you make $25,000 a year, you are in the top two percent of the world by income and considered rich by the world's standards? Paul wrote, "Instruct those who are rich in this present world not to be conceited or fix their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but on God who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy." True riches are not found in our salary but in our relationship with the Lord. As believers, we have experienced "the riches of His grace." Through His love he has been "rich in mercy." Through the "riches of His kindness" He has brought us to repentance. Yes, the "Lord is Lord of all, abounding in riches for all who call upon Him." What a joy that we can proclaim to the lost "the unfathomable riches of Christ". The Lord has told us to not be anxious about our needs in life. Why? Because He has promised that He "shall supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus". Be encouraged!

"And without faith it is impossible to please Him..." - Hebrews 11:6
To begin with, faith is believing or trusting the Lord Jesus Christ for salvation and forgiveness of sin. In receiving the free gift of eternal life, faith is total dependence upon Him and nothing of ourselves. Faith is also "the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen." Peter would say, "though you have not seen Him, you love Him, and though you do not see Him now, you believe in Him." Even though faith gives assurance for the future it will have a profound effect on our present lives. For example, we are to know by faith that Christ will come again "and everyone who has this hope fixed on Him purifies himself, just as He is pure." In essence the Lord wants you to believe Him and trust Him with everything in this life and the life to come. The Lord did not say "well done good, successful and prosperous servant." Nor did He say, "Well done good, popular and influential servant" No, He said, "Well done, good and faithful servant;" Be faithful! Be encouraged!

"Rejoice Always" - 1 Thessalonians 5:16
In Proverbs we read, "A joyful heart is good medicine". Medical research informs us that those who are happy and laugh frequently in life are less susceptible to health issues. And why shouldn't we be joyful? The Lord Himself expressed "...that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full". Joy is also a fruit of the Holy Spirit who indwells us. So why not rejoice always? But you might ask, What about rejoicing during the difficult times? James would say, "Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials...". Jesus said in the midst of persecution we should "Rejoice and be glad...". In one of his many letters John Newton wrote concerning Paul, "The Apostle exhorts believers to rejoice in the Lord always". Then he adds, "...as if he had said...I call upon you to rejoice, not at sometimes only, but at all times; not only when on the mount, but when in the valley; not only when you conquer, but when you are fighting; not only when the Lord shines upon you, but when He seems to hide his face". Rejoice always! Be encouraged!

"...Come over to Macedonia and help us." - Acts 16:9
The Lord called Paul to Macedonia through a vision, but why did they need help? The homeland of the Greek Empire seemed to have everything. They led the world in architecture, art and philosophy and had impressed the world religiously with a god for every facet of life. But Paul rightfully concluded the help they needed was the gospel. Here in America, we have all the comforts of life. We have everything the creative mind, science and technology has afforded us. Nearly every religion in the world has a presence here. But America, like Macedonia of old needs help. We complain about what is happening here in our homeland, but unless we introduce people to the saving grace of Christ through a clear presentation of the gospel with boldness and great conviction, they are without power to change. Will you help? After all you are not alone in this. In the words of Hudson Taylor, "It is His work, not mine nor yours, and yet it is ours not because we are engaged in it, but because we are His and one with Him whose work it is." Be encouraged!

"Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart..." - Luke 18:1
The early church was a church of prayer. From the beginning "they were continually devoting themselves... to prayer". Proponents of the "health and wealth gospel" tell us God will make us healthy and wealthy through prayer and if not, we lack faith. Surely such an approach to God will in time, dishearten us. God is not a cosmic bellhop waiting on our next demand. When Herod determined to put James and Peter to death, the church prayed; one was delivered and one was not. In both cases God answered their prayers, and by faith they accepted the wisdom of God and continued to pray even though James was martyred. Believers are exhorted to "Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving"; We should be thankful that daily we have the privilege to converse with our Father in heaven. And remember, "...the prayer of the upright is His delight". Be encouraged!

"...He humbled Himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross." - Philippians 2:8
There are those who hold that both faith in Christ and obedience are necessary for salvation. It is without question that obedience is very important in the Christian life and evidence of one's love for Christ. However, does obedience earn salvation or does it demonstrate salvation? The answer is found in Romans 5:19 where we read, "For as through the one man's disobedience (Adam) the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One (Jesus Christ) the many will be made righteous". It is not our obedience which often fails but the perfect obedience of Christ that makes salvation possible. With His death on the cross He bore the penalty for our disobedience (sin) and made full payment to God for all of our sins. This alone is reason enough to obey Him. He not only provides the incentive to obey but also the grace and power to obey. Be encouraged!

"...For God has not destined us for wrath..." - 1 Thessalonians 5:9
With lawlessness on the increase, racial and civil unrest, moral decline and dwindling support of Israel, many believers are convinced America is heading for judgment. America is certainly not alone in this because when the Day of Judgment comes, "the Lord's indignation is against all the nations". But should we who have Christ as our Savior live in fear? In the context of His coming judgment Isaiah writes, "Encourage the exhausted, and strengthen the feeble. Say to those with anxious heart, take courage, fear not. Behold, your God will come with vengeance; the recompense of God will come, but He will save you." He Himself has said, "I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you". This is why we can grasp with childlike faith that our "God has not destined us for wrath, but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ". Praise be to the Lord and be encouraged!

"...I count all things to be loss..." - Philippians 3:8
So many people see Christianity in a negative light. They view it as a list of do's and don'ts which takes all of the fun out of life, as all loss and no gain, with so much to be given up. But is that true? As a Christian you give up the passing pleasure of sin for the joy of knowing Christ. You give up the love of the world for "the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge". You give up any effort to earn your salvation and stand in His mercy and grace. You give up the insecurity of an uncertain world "to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you". Anything you might give up has no comparison to what you gain through "the unfathomable riches of Christ". Therefore, "count all things to be loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ". "...the gospel of your salvation..." - Ephesians 1:13
We live in a society increasingly characterized by lawlessness, protests, personal demands and perceived rights. To see oneself as a sinner in need of a Savior has no place in the age of self-esteem. In 1950, only 12% of our youth saw themselves as important as compared with 80% in 2005. Are we better off? Among other things, the last days will be characterized by those who will be lovers of self, boastful, arrogant, ungrateful and conceited. Are we not there? But praise be to God that through His gospel He humbles us as sinners so that we might come to faith in the Savior our Lord Jesus Christ. Only His gospel could become the gospel of our salvation. Thanks be to God for the gospel, "that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures." O, the wonderful gospel, that in the midst of difficult times, it is still the power of God unto salvation to all who will believe. Be encouraged!

"For while we were enemies..." - Romans 5:10
Recently, I was in a casual conversation with someone with whom I was not previously acquainted. The conversation led to the various places we had travelled. When I told him I had been to Russia, he bluntly asked, "Why would you go there?" When I told him I went as a missionary to share Christ and give them Bibles, he became visibly angry, quite emotional and said, "Those people hate us. They are our enemies. Why would you want to help them?" His language became almost unbearable, and he just turned and walked away. As I stood there, I was reminded of Romans 5:10, which reads, "For if while we were enemies, we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life". Yes, "For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly." These ungodly were you and I. We needed help, and the help came. His name was Jesus. Be encouraged!

"Draw near to God and He will draw near to you." - James 4:8
There are many things that hinder us from drawing near to God and having a close relationship with Jesus Christ. We commit ourselves to daily prayer and Scripture, but in time we just give up. We fight and resist temptation and sin, but in time the fight is over. I am reminded of the woman, who was no doubt physically weakened by hemorrhaging for twelve years, who pushed her way through a crowd to get near to Christ; likewise, the friends of a paralytic had to climb up on top of the house, dig a hole in the roof and lower him on a pallet so he would be near to Christ; with the same diligence, the blind beggar, Bartimaeus, kept yelling out to Christ even though many sternly told him to be quiet until he was brought near to Christ. Is it easy for you to give up? Don't give up. Remember, He has said, "I will strengthen you, surely I will help you. Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand." Therefore, draw near to God. Be encouraged!

"That I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection..." - Philippians 3:10
Recently while taking the back roads through several Texas towns, we noticed several churches which do not refer to themselves in name, as a church. There is a good chance their programs and preaching are just as accommodating to the culture as is their name. They give the impression that cultural identity takes priority over identity with Christ. But, to know Christ can never be secondary for He Himself has said, "And this is eternal life, that they may know Thee, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom Thou hast sent." If I may take liberty with a well-known hymn:
I'd rather have Jesus than cultural identity;
I'd rather know Him and the life that He gives.
I'd rather have the One who "put to death enmity,"
I'd rather have Jesus for I know that He lives.

"In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth." - Genesis 1:1
The Bible teaches that God created the heavens and earth, all living organisms and mankind in six days. As believers, we need to hold this as absolute truth, as opposed to the theory of evolution. In recent years political correctness has championed that theory even to the point of influencing those within Christianity. A well-known televangelist has stated, "So there was a time when these giant reptiles (dinosaurs) were on the earth, and it was before the time of the Bible." He added, "If you fight science, you are going to lose your children, and I believe in telling them the way it was." However, if you love your children, you need to teach them the truth; and the truth is found in Scripture. Scripture tells us, "All things came into being by Him; and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being", including dinosaurs; and it all began with Genesis 1:1. Science continues to change, but "the sum of Thy word is truth" and "Forever, O Lord, Thy word is settled in heaven." Be encouraged!

"Therefore having been justified by faith..." - Romans 5:1
What an amazing truth that we who were born in sin, practiced sin and will continue to sin for the rest of our lives have been justified by faith. When we come to Christ in saving faith, God declares us righteous as if we have never committed any sin. We are not only forgiven, but "As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us." From the moment of salvation, we stand in the righteousness of Christ as if we had never sinned. How is this possible? "He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him". When a person sins, he is guilty before God and deserves judgment and condemnation. However, with saving faith God takes away the burden, guilt and weight of sin because Christ died for that sin. "There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus." "There came a woman of Samaria..." - John 4:7
As believers, living in a time when there is a growing tolerance and insensitivity toward evil, it becomes easier to despise those who live in or flaunt their sin. However, when the Lord met a very immoral woman at Jacob's well, He did not despise her but instead offered her living water springing up to eternal life. What a great lesson for us living in a world of moral decadence. Undoubtedly, we all have people in our lives who have succumbed to the darkness of this world. Do we consider the beyond the saving grace of God? Or, with the heart of God, are we "not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance"? So be encouraged! Our own salvation proves that God's hand is not too short to save any and all who come to Him.

"And the Lord opened the mouth of the donkey, and she said to Balaam..." - Numbers 22:28
With the progression of science and technology the great miracles of the Bible have been called into question. Evolution is continually championed over a literal six-day creation. A major U.S. newspaper recently published an article declaring Moses and the parting of the Red sea a myth. Several years ago while witnessing to a couple, they told me they could never accept the Bible as true because they could never believe a donkey could speak. Balaam's donkey saw the angel of the Lord with sword drawn in front of her and refused to go further. It was then that the Lord opened the donkey's mouth because Balaam did not see the terror that was ahead. Paul, when warning that we must all give an account to God said, "Therefore, knowing the terror of the Lord we persuade men." That is what I call New Testament "donkey talk". After all "it is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God". Like the donkey of old we need not go any further. We just need to open our mouths. By His Spirit we have all been empowered by the Lord to warn men of their need for the Savior. Be encouraged!

"Be still and know that I am God..." - Psalm 46:10 KJV
The fad of today in Christianity is contemplative prayer, "breath prayers", going into silence and emptying your mind. Why are so many involved in what the Eastern religions, occults and mystics have practiced for centuries? Proponents use Psalm 46:10 to justify such practice, but the verse in its context has nothing to do with actual silence. It is an exhortation to trust God as our stronghold and not ourselves. Paul told the Corinthians not to abandon their minds while praying. He told the Colossian believers to "Set your mind on the things above, not on things that are on earth", meaning we should focus on the eternal and not the temporal. Because life is tough and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will suffer, we are to fix "our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith". So do not give yourself to this unbiblical and spiritually dangerous fad of today. Rather, trust God in all things, pursue that which is of eternal value, follow the example of Christ when facing opposition to your faith and be encouraged!

"...Born again to a living hope..." - 1 Peter 1:3
When we place our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, God places in our heart a living hope, "for in hope we have been saved." Faith centers on Jesus Christ and what He did for us on the cross. Hope looks ahead to what He will do in the future. Faith accepts and hope expects. Saving faith and true hope are inseparable because we read in Scripture, "Christ in you the hope of glory." Your circumstances may not be the best and the world is a mess, but are you "looking for the blessed hope and the appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Christ Jesus"? You see, this "hope does not disappoint". This hope, given to you in salvation, is sufficient in this life, in death and for all eternity. Yes, your Savior, who gave you this hope, will come again. So, "straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." Be encouraged!

"And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" - John 8:32
Today, it seems truth is hard to come by. It should not surprise us that national leaders lie, news anchors lie, politicians lie and the average person lies. After all, the Scripture states "...let God be found true, though every man be found a liar..." So where do we go for truth, absolute truth, that we can trust with our heart, mind and soul? There are three great sources of truth on which we can always trust and count. The first is Jesus, for He is "... the way, and the truth, and the life..." Then, there is the Word of God for "... Thy Word is truth." And finally, there is the Holy Spirit because "...when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth...". God is the only source of truth, and all that claims to be truth today is not God's truth. The truth that comes from Christ, His Word and the Holy Spirit is the truth we can know, believe and live our lives by. It is the only truth that will set us free. Be encouraged!

"These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may be in you, and that your joy may be made full." - John 15:11
There are two types of joy. Conditional joy, experienced by all men which is based upon one's circumstances. It would be the joy of the Seahawks last year and the joy of the Patriots this year. But then there is an unconditional joy given to all who believe by the grace of God. This joy is not based upon winning or any other circumstances. The source of this joy is our unchanging God and His unconditional promises. It is "God, who richly supplies us with all things to enjoy." The joy that God gives we cannot muster up or make happen. All they hype and entertainment in the world cannot make it happen. Having riches, possessions and great popularity and influence cannot make it happen. "...Christ Jesus Our Lord." - Romans 6:23
The title "Lord" represents the Hebrew word "Yahweh" which means the Scripture is declaring that Jesus is God. When Thomas realized by faith who Jesus really was he exclaimed, "My Lord and my God!" When we come to Christ by faith our search for God is over because Jesus is Lord and God. The search for salvation is over because "the Lord is my light and my salvation". Our search for forgiveness is over because Jesus our Lord is "a God of forgiveness." Our search for righteousness is over "for the Lord is righteous." Our search for security is over "for Thou alone, O Lord, dost make me to dwell in safety." Our search for guidance and spiritual wisdom is over for "the mighty One, God the Lord has spoken" through His word. "O death, where is your victory?" - 1 Corinthians 15:55
Luke's gospel tells us that Simeon had been promised by the Holy Spirit that he would see the Messiah before he died. When the Christ child was only eight days old and brought into the temple, Simeon, now in his old age, took Him in his arms and blessed God, and said "Now Lord, Thou dost let Thy bond-servant depart in peace, according to Thy word, for my eyes have seen Thy salvation." Ryle comments, "He speaks like one for whom the grave has lost its terrors, and the world its charms. He desires to be released from the miseries of this pilgrim-state of existence, and to be allowed to go home. He is willing to be "absent from the body and present with the Lord." He speaks as one who knows where he is going when he departs this life, and cares not how soon he goes. The change with him will be a change for the better, and he desires that his change may come." "It is good to give thanks to the Lord..." - Psalm 92:1
Why is it good to give thanks to the Lord? To begin with, He has given us His Son so that we may be forgiven of our sin and never come under His condemnation. He has not only removed the guilt of sin but has delivered us from its penalty and power. Therefore, in thanksgiving, we worship, serve and obey the Lord. We do not do it to gain His favor because we already have His favor. The driving force for how we live and the incentive for our worship, service and obedience is not what He will do for us, but gratitude for what He has already done for us. Paul begins his instruction for personal evangelism by writing "Devote yourself to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving." The point is clear. The motivation to share Christ flows from a life which is thankful that one already has Christ. As believers, we have so much to be thankful for. May it be all the incentive we need to worship, serve and obey our Lord. Be encouraged!

"How long, O Lord...?" - Habakkuk 1:2
Habakkuk was a unique prophet. While the other prophets spoke to the people about God's judgment, Habakkuk spoke to God and begged for it to come. Godly men and women, past and present have often asked, "How long, O Lord?", in regard to the judgment of sin. The martyred saints of the Great Tribulation will cry out, "How long, O Lord... wilt Thou refrain from judging and avenging our blood on those who dwell on the earth?" It is written "the present heaven and earth by His word are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men." Do not let the sin of the world get you down. God will judge it. Do not wallow in the sin of the world, God will judge it. In the meantime, the Lord is not slow concerning His promise of judgment but is long suffering not wishing for any to perish. Therefore, cry out to the Lord to bring an end to sin! And cry out to men to turn from sin! Be encouraged!
